ตะโก้เป็นแมวที่พี่สาวเราเก็บมาเลี้ยงจากโกดังร้างกลางเมืองที่ทั้งครอบครัวถูกปล่อยทิ้งไว้ หลังจากเจ้าของย้ายออก ตะโก้มีพี่น้องรวม 4 ตัว พี่สาวเราช่วยหาบ้านให้แมวทุกตัว บ้านเราเลยรับตะโก้เข้ามาเป็นแมวตัวแรกที่เลี้ยงในบ้าน

ลูคีเมียแมวติดจากแม่สู่ลูก

ตะโก้เป็นแมวเงียบและหวาดกลัวคน ตะโก้ร้องหาแม่และพี่ๆ ของมันหนักมาก ก่อนจะเริ่มคุ้นกับคนแปลกหน้าอย่างเรา บ้านเราเป็นทาวน์เฮาส์ที่รับแมวได้แค่ตัวเดียว ตอนนั้นก็ได้แต่หวังว่าตะโก้คงจะเข้าใจและไม่โกรธพวกเราที่พรากมันมาจากครอบครัว อยู่มาอีกไม่นาน เราก็พบว่าตะโก้ติดเชื้อลูคีเมีย ซึ่งน่าจะติดมาจากครอบครัว ตะโก้ไม่มีอาการอะไรผิดปกติ แต่สิ่งที่สังเกตได้

วิธีสังเกตแมวติดเชื้อลูคีเมีย

1. มีอาการเหงือกอักเสบ แดง และแมวมีกลิ่นปากรุนแรง ทำให้กินอาหารลำบาก
2. ป่วยง่าย ติดหวัดจากคนและจากแมวด้วยกันง่ายมาก เพราะภูมิต้านทานต่ำ
3. บางทีแมวจะอารมณ์หงุดหงิด อาจเพราะความรู้สึกไม่สบาย บางทีแมวจะนอนเยอะมากๆ เหมือนป่วยอยู่ตลอด

เมื่อแมวที่เก็บมาเลี้ยงเป็นลูคีเมีย

ตะโก้มีอาการเหงือกอักเสบตลอดเวลา ทั้งๆ ที่หิวมาก แต่ก็กินได้ทีละน้อย เพราะอาจจะเจ็บเหงือกเคี้ยวไม่ค่อยไหวก็เป็นได้ หลังจาก 2 เดือน ตะโก้ก็ได้กินยาบำรุงเลือด และอาหารเพิ่มน้ำหนัก เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับการทำหมัน หมอป้อนอาหารแมวป่วย a/d เพื่อเพิ่มน้ำหนักและเพิ่มความแข็งแรง หมอบอกกับเราว่า ลูคีเมียแมว รักษาได้ไปตามอาการ เรากังวล แต่ตะโก้ไม่รู้สึกเดือดร้อนกับความไม่สมบูรณ์ของตัวเอง ยังคงวิ่งเล่น ร่าเริง เหมือนลูกแมวทั่วไป นั่นทำให้เราตัดสินใจดูแลตะโก้ให้ดีที่สุดจนถึงวันสุดท้ายของมัน

My family adopted a little white kitten who was abandoned with her whole family in a garage. My sister found these little creatures and asked all her friends if anyone would like to have a cat. While the cat’s family have all found homes, my sister picked one for me and that is how Tako became a member of our family.

Tako was a typical cat. She was quiet and scared of people. It took a few weeks for her to be familiar with me. She missed her family I guessed. I was sorry that I could take only her instead of bringing everyone. My home is just for one cat. I hope that she understood and forgave me for that unhappy separation.

Later on we found that Tako had leukemia and she would never be cured in her short life. We didn’t know at first until we noticed she had a bad smell coming from her mouth. Her gums were red. She seem hungry but ate very little. She cried hard with the pain or hunger perhaps. Tako was in the Vet’s house for almost two months. She needed iron supplement pills and soft food to fatten her up so she would be strong enough to be neutered.

Her unhealthy little body doesn’t bother her in everyday living. Tako is loved and spoiled as an only child. We love her and decide to be with her until the last day.
