“The world’s happiest nation? Whoever is happy, but not a tourist like me. I was pickpocketed in the first day of my arrival. So I got gifts for my loved ones as well got lessons for myself.”
My Copenhagen Trip is my dream trip
Copenhagen was my choice this year to spend 4 days vacation there. I booked and stayed at Copenhagen Downtown Hostel which was a cozy and friendly place. I bought a 3 day Copenhagen Card, which was a smart choice for a visitor who loved taking public transportation and enjoyed museums. I believed my vacation in this compact city must be as great as it is claimed to be the world’s happiest nation. However, things did not always turn out the way we expected.
Copenhagen airport welcomes me warmly
I arrived Copenhagen Kastrup Airport around 1 pm where I found this welcome board to reassure my decision to choose this city. Wooden floor in airport gave me good impression about landing in the crafted and well designed country. I didn’t stop for a cup of coffee. I just wanted to head to the hostel to leave all my suitcase and started exploring the town. I took underground and got off at Norreport station and walked down to Norregrade road to the hostel. I wore suit with a backpack and one small suitcase, a map in hand. “Go straight down the road” was what people told me when I asked. I did that and checked the map to make sure I was on the right track.
One man changed my Copenhagen trip to hell
Then a man in his black suit came and tried to help me with the direction. He couldn’t speak English properly but I thought it was very kind of people in this town to try to help me. He got closer to see the map. I felt strange and tried to get away. He made some strange sound and finally left me with my wallet. I noticed and ran after him. He took all my cash and threw wallet away and ran. I picked up my wallet and ran after him till he disappeared in the crowd. Anger, disappointment and sorrow overwhelmed me. I tried to report to the police expecting that good quality country should have had a good system for this but none. The policeman said I would got only a receipt which I could do nothing about it. “Forget it and make your way here”
20 pounds with Citibank made me survive in Copenhagen
I got by with my 20 pounds that I folded in my wallet and a credit card. I did all I planned to do. I visited very good museums. I spent time on good coffee and beer. I got gifts for my loved ones as well got lessons for myself. I felt the change inside. The change is about my point of view of the world and human beings. So I write this story to remind myself for those points;
Things that you should do in Copenhagen or any trip in the world
- Never trust people no matter where they come from and how they look.
- Never speak to the one who comes to you though you didn’t asked. Keep them away. Always remind your self that they come to you because they want something from you.
- Don’t show that you need help.
- Don’t keep all your money in one place. Separate them.
- Don’t believe the claim. No one knows the whole truth about anything.
- Don’t run after anyone and leave your belongings somewhere. They can harm you and you can lose even more.
“The Limitations of human beings mean that no one can ever know the whole truth about anything.”
– Dave Trott –
from the book One plus one equals three
Good things I learnt from Copenhagen trip
- I learnt that I was a quiet fighter. I may lose this pickpocket game but I won my anger. I went on and enjoyed most of the trip after that event happened.
- Copenhagen is such a beautiful city.
- I learnt to travel by myself with more caution, more aware.
I will return to that beautiful city somedays.

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience in Copenhagen. It serves a good reminder for the dangerous we all face while traveling. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay
