More than loving cats, it’s about doing something to help them. My trip to Fukuoka last year was worth more than I expected. I met a real cat lover who ran Nekokura Hostel where I stayed and it was also a cat shelter. This place inspired me to find out more about how they help cats.
Nekokura Hostel โฮสเทลแมวในฟูกูโอกะ
Nekokura Hostel เริ่มเปิดให้บริการเดือนมีนาคม 2017 โดย Shinako Mori เจ้าของที่ทุ่มเทความรักปกป้องแมวร่วมกับเจ้าหน้าที่อาสาสมัครมาหลายปีก่อนที่จะเปิดโฮสเทล เพื่อทำให้การช่วยเหลือแมวเป็นรูปธรรมที่อยู่ได้ทั้งคนทั้งแมว ชินนาโกะเล่าให้ Cat club ฟังถึงที่มาและการช่วยเหลือแมวในเชลเตอร์ของเธอ
Nekokura Hostel was established in March 2017 by Shinako Mori, the owner who has been doing volunteer activities for cats with a cat shelter administrator, individually, for many years. She gave Cat club brief information about her hostel, which is also a cat shelter.

“ในญี่ปุ่น มีหน่วยงานอาสาสมัครมากมายที่ได้รับเงินช่วยเหลือจากรัฐบาลญี่ปุ่น รวมทั้งหน่วยบริหารท้องถิ่น แต่ก็ยังมีกลุ่มคนส่วนใหญ่ที่ออกเงินส่วนตัวเพื่อช่วยแมวจรและหาเงินช่วยจากการรับบริจาค ซึ่งเงินที่ได้ไม่เพียงพอสำหรับสิ่งจำเป็นพื้นฐานที่แมวต้องใช้ จึงมีคนมากมายที่ต้องการช่วยเหลือแมวแต่ตัวเองก็ต้องอยู่อย่างขัดสน เราจึงอยากเปลี่ยนสถานการณฺ์ที่เป็นอยู่นี้ให้ดีขึ้น และสามารถทำให้การช่วยเหลือแมวมีความยั่งยืน เราจึงทำโฮสเทลนี้ขึ้น โดยรายได้จากห้องพัก ร้านอาหาร จะใช้จ่ายเป็นค่ายา อาหาร และทรายแมว”
“In Japan, there are volunteer organizations that are subsidized by the government and local governments, but the vast majority of people volunteer at their own private expense. Or, they are seeking for donations. However, it is very difficult to receive donations on an ongoing basis. Also, many volunteer activists invest their personal wealth and this makes households struggle. Because of the desire to change the current situation, we have built accommodation facilities to continuously operate centers for abandoned and protected cats. We buy cat food and toilet sand from the accommodation income and we also have a restaurant to supplement our income to pay the cats’ medical bills”

“Cats come from the animal protection center, which is under the jurisdiction of the administration. We are rescue a cat whose culling has been decided. There is no visit by the veterinarian. We take cats to an animal hospital.”

“Nekokura Hostel was also created as a workplace for volunteers. Calculating from the size of the shelter, there are roughly 15 cats. One staff member manages the shelter as a job. The reception manager is also concurrently in charge. Besides, there are about ten volunteer staff members.”
นอกจากการเป็นที่พักของนักท่องเที่ยว และเป็นเชลเตอร์แมว Nekokura ยังจัดเวิร์คช็อปทำ ‘โมบายแมว’ เป็นประจำ เพื่อให้คนรักแมวมีกิจกรรมสนุกๆ ร่วมกัน โดยโฮสเทลจะมีของที่ระลึกขายในบริเวณร้านอาหาร
Besides being an accommodation and cat shelter, Nekokura is the place that holds workshops for ‘Cat mobile’ for cat people to enjoy the event together. Souvenirs are also available within the restaurant area.

“การหาบ้านใหม่ให้แมวเราจะประกาศทางอินเตอร์เน็ต แล้วเราจะรวมผู้ที่ลงชื่ออยากเลี้ยงแมวทุกๆ เดือนๆ ละ 1 ครั้ง แต่เราจะไม่ได้มอบแมวให้เลยทันที เราจะต้องตรวจเยี่ยมบ้านของคนที่จะรับเลี้ยงแมวก่อนว่าเหมาะกับการเลี้ยงแมวหรือไม่ แล้วเราจะพาแมวไปส่งหลังจากที่สำรวจบ้านแล้ว จะไม่มีการส่งมอบแมวที่เชลเตอร์ ด้วยความที่ญี่ปุ่นยังไม่มีตำรวจที่ดูแลเรื่องนี้ เราจึงต้องเช็คให้รอบคอบก่อนจะให้แมวไป เพราะถ้าให้ไปแล้ว แมวเกิดถูกทารุณ เราจะไม่สามารถรับกลับมาได้”
“Cats’ new homes will be found at the “Internet site for people who want to become owners of cats”. Also, once a month we are gather people who want to own a cat at the shelter. It is a reservation system. However, the cats will not be handed them immediately. We will visit the new house and investigate the environment where the cat lives. I will bring a cat to them after the investigation. Cats cannot be taken directly out of the shelter. There is no animal police in Japan yet, so we need to check carefully if they are a suitable owner. Even if a cat is abused after being transferred to the new owner, I cannot regain it.”

ถ้ายังนึกไม่ออกและรู้สึกกังวลในเรื่องความสะอาด กลิ่น และเสียงดังรบกวน ของการใช้สถานที่ร่วมกันของการเป็นที่พักสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยว และที่พักพิงของแมวจร Cat club การันตีได้เลยว่า Nekokura Hostel เป็นโฮสเทลที่สะอาด เป็นระเบียบ และเงียบมาก มากกว่าโฮสเทลในยุโรปหลายๆ ที่ๆ เคยไป เพราะโฮสเทลแยกส่วนจากเชลเตอร์ชัดเจน และมีกฏกติกาสำหรับแขกที่มาพักให้ปฏิบัติตาม โดยหลักๆ คือการรักษาความสะอาดและต้องไม่รบกวนแมว และถ้าแขกคนไหนอยากเข้ามาเที่ยวชมในเชลเตอร์ จะต้องลงชื่อจองในระบบ โดยการเข้าชมเชล์เตอร์จะจัดวันละ 2 รอบ ตามเวลาที่แมวตื่น คือประมาณ 17.00 และ 19.00 โดยแต่ละรอบ จะให้เวลาประมาณ 30 นาที โดยกิจกรรมนี้จะอนุญาตให้เฉพาะแขกที่พักเท่านั้น
If you can’t imagine the place how we work together in one place and worry about the cleanliness, the smell and the noise, Cat club can guarantee that the Nekokura Hostel is super clean, tidy and quiet. The hostel has regulation for every visitor to follow such as when guests enter the shelter, they need to sterilize their fingers, legs and clothes with a disinfectant solution. And if guests want to visit the shelter, a reservation is required. It is at a time when a cat becomes active. Currently, reservations are accepted at two time periods. From 5 pm and from 7 pm. Each period is for about 30 minutes. The Shelter tour is only for guests staying at our hostel. So the place is safe and sound for both guests and cats.
